SENIOR LEGAL EMPOWERMENT NAVIGATOR
Michael Bayles is a Senior Legal Empowerment Navigator with Living with Conviction, where he helps individuals understand and exercise their rights in the post-conviction space. For nearly five years, Michael has been dedicated to empowering community members by providing guidance, support, and access to legal information that helps them navigate complex systems with confidence.
One of the aspects of his work that Michael values most is seeing the positive impact Living with Conviction has on people's lives. Hearing the gratitude and feedback from community members reinforces his commitment to helping others overcome barriers and move forward.
Outside of work, Michael enjoys spending time fishing and has a passion for fast cars.
ANNA BOSCH, JD, LLM, PhD (she/her)
LEGAL DIRECTOR, RESEARCHER, & ATTORNEY
Dr. Anna B. Bosch serves as Legal Director for Living with Conviction. In this role, she co-supervises Living with Conviction’s legal empowerment program, an access-to-justice effort launched in 2019 to fully realize reforms enacted by the Washington State legislature in 2018, 2022 and 2023. Anna is also an Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Washington School of Law, where she teaches classes on Legal Empowerment (E526) and Rule of Law (E512), and directs the PhD in Law and Visiting Scholars Programs. Anna began her legal career in 1999 as a prosecutor for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and often calls upon her early career experience within the system to help LwC find solutions that reduce barriers toward meeting its mission of economic and racial justice for individuals with criminal convictions. Anna is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, and holds a JD degree from Boston University School of Law, and LLM and PhD in Law degrees from UW School of Law.
DEBORAH ESPINOSA, MA, JD (she/her)
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ATTORNEY, & MULTIMEDIA STORYTELLER
Deborah Espinosa founded Living with Conviction because she believes in the power of the law in the people's hands.
For most of her career, she worked alongside governments in the global south — developing and implementing pro-poor, gender-responsive legal frameworks around land rights that benefit the communities who need them most, particularly in African countries. At the same time, she stayed rooted at the grassroots level, working on legal aid, legal empowerment, and storytelling for impact, including legislative and narrative change. It was this grassroots work that led her to pursue a Certificate in Photography from the Rocky Mountain School of Photography — she had come to see that a powerful image can do what a legal brief alone cannot: help people outside a community understand what's truly at stake for the people inside it. Most recently, Deborah served as a Public Legal Education Attorney at the Northwest Justice Project, where she created plain language legal resources for people who could not afford an attorney — work born from the same conviction that has driven her from the start: that the law only matters if people can actually use it.
Deborah holds a JD from the University of Washington School of Law. After law school, she clerked for the Honorable Anne Ellington at the Washington State Court of Appeals and served as Attorney Advisor for the Office of the Solicitor at the US Department of the Interior, before briefly litigating natural resource disputes in both federal and state courts. She also holds a MA from the UW Jackson School of International Studies and a BA in History from UC Berkeley.

Lisa Giap is a Legal Empowerment Navigator and Development Specialist for Living with Conviction, Lisa is dedicated to advancing reentry and building stronger, more equitable communities. She has transformed adversity into purpose and is passionate about advocacy, empowering others, and creating lasting change through the power of lived experience.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR & LEGAL EMPOWERMENT NAVIGATOR
Sophia Thomas is Living with Conviction’s Deputy Director and Legal Empowerment Navigator. She is a legal advocate and community leader dedicated to advancing equity and opportunity for justice-impacted individuals. Her work centers on post-conviction relief, legal empowerment, and removing systemic barriers related to criminal records and legal financial obligations. Drawing on both professional expertise and lived experience, Sophia collaborates closely with community organizations, courts, and civil legal aid partners to expand access to relief such as court debt reduction, record vacatur, and driver’s license reinstatement. She brings a strong commitment to anti-racist, gender-affirming, and community-led approaches to public safety and legal services, with a particular focus on building pathways to stability, dignity, and long-term success. Sophia holds a MBA from Eastern Washington University.
NICOLE MCMURRAY, MS (she/her)
PROGRAM ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
Nicole McMurray is Living with Conviction’s Program Administrate Assistant with experience managing contracts and projects in both nonprofit and government settings. Her previous experience includes managing contracts for local refugee resettlement and homeless housing programs, designing and implementing data collection for human services programs, and assisting with emergency support functions for Snohomish County government. Nicole holds an MS in Sustainable Development from the University of Exeter (UK).
